3 Ways to Bring Confidence Into Your Next Job Interview
This morning I wrapped up a coaching call with a client who had a big interview coming up in… about an hour. We were rushing at the end, but once we hung up I thought, Wow—this really matters.
These are three ways I’ve seen people stop feeling like they’re on trial and start actually enjoying the interview. I wanted to share them while they were fresh.
1. Show Up as Yourself — Let It Be a Real Conversation
One of the biggest confidence killers is treating an interview like a test you have to pass. Confidence grows when you treat it more like a conversation—similar to grabbing coffee with someone you’re curious about.
When you’re relaxed (not chugging another espresso or cramming last-minute notes), your real personality comes through. That ease is contagious. Interviewers feel it, and the conversation flows more naturally.
I’ve had clients get offers simply because the hiring manager said, “You just seemed like someone we’d really enjoy working with.”
2. Stay Present When Questions Get Hard
Confidence isn’t about having perfect answers—it’s about how you stay with yourself when things get uncomfortable.
Tough questions are inevitable. When they come, staying calm, taking a breath, and responding thoughtfully shows emotional steadiness and self-trust. You don’t need a polished or textbook response.
How you hold yourself under pressure often says far more than the words you choose.
3. Give Yourself Space to Settle Before You Go In
Right before the interview is not the time to cram, scroll, or spike your nervous system.
My client today was tempted to squeeze in one more coffee and check emails right up until the Zoom link opened. Instead, they took a short walk, put their phone on Do Not Disturb, and focused on how they wanted to show up: relaxed, friendly, curious.
Even 10 intentional minutes like this can completely change your presence. You walk in (or log on) more centered, more grounded, and ready to connect—which often turns a nerve-wracking interview into a genuinely good conversation.
If you’ve got an interview coming up, try these. Breathe. Be yourself. Stay present. Lead with curiosity.
You’ve got this.
